The History of Great Bay Services
On March 8, 1954 a group of parents met in Durham, NH to advocate for the needs of their children with developmental disabilities. Special education did not exist in schools. Families were told to send their loved ones to the state institutions instead. These intrepid parents formed their own school.
This was the first association in New Hampshire dedicated to children with intellectual disabilities. The group would go on to start the first special education classes in the state, play an instrumental part in closing the state institutions, and form a training center to provide employment for adults with disabilities.
This association continued to adapt over time, including expanding into Maine in 2015, and changing to meet the needs of individuals of the region. Almost 70 years later, it continues on as Great Bay Services.

DEI Statement
Great Bay Services was founded at the time that the US civil rights movement was being born and see our history as being tied to the fight for justice and equity. Throughout our 70-year history we have evolved and grown alongside major diversity legislations and societal changes. Disability is the forefront of our organization, but we encourage and celebrate all forms of diversity, fostering equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility for all. Creating an inclusive community where everyone has access to equal opportunities and feels they belong is vital to us as an organization – not just within Great Bay Services but in the world around us. We welcome and encourage all to live happy and healthy lives no matter who they are, where they come from, what they look like, their gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, or age.
